Whoever thought of that headline in the Herald this morning had it exactly right. I am delighted to see the return of the gnome, if only to laugh at the long slow descent to the end of his career. Paul Holmes is an entertainer, not a journalist, and the best thing TVNZ did last year was get rid of him.
The fact that a Simpsons repeat had more people watching than his debut, simply makes it all the more delicious.
And the fact that last night he rated a whole point less than Hogan's Heroes did last Tuesday is possibly even funnier still!
Hooooooooogaaaaan!

Jordan - I don't think Holmes would consider himself a journalist. He is a broadcaster. TVNZ didn't 'get rid of him'.
As an obvious fan of state funded propaganda, you should be concerned at the falling off of viewers for Susan Woods show. Once advertising revenue moves from TVNZ to Prime, the complete meltdown of state TV will be on its way to completion - a good thing. State Radio should be next.

As far as I have seen it, Close Up @ 7 is utter rubbish.
My last hope is the TV3 vehicle for John Campbell, to actually get a current affairs programme.
Terribly sorry that some popular media providers don't meet your ideological preference, Gooner - giving people the choice to listen to non-commercial content is, I think, a good thing. Protecting national broadcasting institutions is a critical part of nationbuilding. That's why every country does it.
I'm sad you don't agree.

Jordan -
Have to agree — Paul Holmes and Close Up are that sad beast: info-tainment that neither informs nor entertains.
Let's give Three a go. I cringed my way through John Campbell's efforts at the travelogue (I know it was called 'A Queen's Tour' but the smirking campiness got on my tits big-time) and the interview show (isn't there rules against on-air fellatio, John?), but Campbell and producter Carol Hirshfeld can't do any worse...
Anyway, here's my prediction — TVNZ has such strong market dominance (and very serious staff and resources to throw at 'Close Up') that Three and Prime will shut up their prime time freak shows within a year along with the Herald on Sunday.

If you live in Auckland, I can recommend the Deutsche Welle world service news on Triangle. It's a bit thin on NZ stories (I think the last one involved Lord of the Rings) but has excellent world coverage.

I'm interested in what people think of the Campbell show? Is it what everyone thought (and hoped) it would be?

Campbell's an immature twit.
