I have to say, the month of July was very kind to us here in Wellington, and the balmy weather has carried right on through to August too. I was sitting thinking about last winter, and continued to as I walked to work this morning. Was far, far colder. The last few days have felt like late September, not early August.
Maybe global warming has hit at last? ;)
Is your part of the world warmer than usual?
We've had an extended run of great whether here in the capital.
Winter election? What winter election? I actually got a little burnt (just a little) on my lips in the weekend.
If this is global warming bring on more of it I say.

weather not whether.
Posted by: Mike Collins | Tuesday, 09 August 2005 at 09:45 AM
Yeah, here in CHCH its also been warmer than usual, we've had hardly any frosts and the ski fields havn't had much snow.
Lets hope for a nice balmy summer!

I almost got burnt too on the weekend. Quite bizarre. If this is winter, what's the bet summer is the hottest ever?
(hope I have not jinxed it)

Yeah has been lovely. Lets make sure it stays and go burn some coal.

It is snowing here now
But it has been a very mild winter Who said global warming had a down side
Posted by: Ray | Tuesday, 09 August 2005 at 11:13 AM
Up here in Dorkland it too has been mild. Soccer on Saturdays has been devoid of hail, cold sideways rain and mud like it usually is this time of year.

I hope global warming is coming. A nice mild sub tropical North Island will do me. But I do not think so. A mild winter means a shitty spring I think.

Here in Dunedin, I've had to mow the bloody lawns!!!
Nice winters day here today thought.
While we are on my favourite topic, if anyone's interested (geography blog now Jordan), heres the link to the University of Otago's weather station

I see Act has a loan calculator demonstrating how much better off we would be with their tax cuts - I recommend it - it demonstrates we are better off with Act - we do not need a socialist government stealing obscene amount of money - we can use our money as we see fit - not nanny government.

Peter,
Fantastic, I'm going to be better off with more money in my pocket, shame my society will be worse off.
You see, the I in society isn't a capital I, and you can claim it is till the cows come home, and I can take an opposing view to that.
Posted by: Paul | Tuesday, 09 August 2005 at 12:47 PM
Mild Winter because we had a mild summer previously.
Posted by: Stephen Cooper | Tuesday, 09 August 2005 at 01:02 PM
I'm surprised that the government hasn't claimed credit for the weather yet.
Posted by: whaleoil | Tuesday, 09 August 2005 at 01:13 PM
Have to say that Wairarapa in winter was warmer than central Victoria! Despite being almost four degrees of latitude further south.
Melbourne has been reasonably mild too, there's a lack of really cold days.
If you want warmer winters and hotter summers and more revenue for the tourist industry, you must pull out of the Kyoto protocol and waste more fossil fuels. Perhaps your policy department could look at that...

Paul - I understand and pity you - you are economically illiterate (Proven by the fact you are a socialsit) - yes you will have more money - and lower taxes increases ambition, risk, iniative and standards of living - you will be able to afford (like evryone else ) better services. You will have choice and freedom. The government function in this utopia will be to look after those who cannot look after themselves - not provide a hammock like the one provided for my Brother in law's "partner" who is one of ten kids and whose mother is actively encouraging her kids into a welfare dependancy by getting knocked up to any loser (eg my brother in law) and living off the fat provided by a weak gummint and my excessive taxes for the parasitic welfare beneficaries.

And the market will rule us like a king...
It's not gonna come true just because you keep repeating it.

Peter,
you talk about me all through the post as how I will be better off. that may be well and true, but the I will be sadder, as the country that I love will be foreever some right wing ideologically driven hell, without heart.
Thanks for the pity and the kind comments about my understanding of economics.
Shame we aren't allowed an opinion here, we all have to be bloody experts (which of course is just an opinion when it comes to politics and economics).

I love Peter McK's diversion from an essentially non partisan thread to advertise the dead-man-walking party’s crappy calculator.
Posted by: Pete | Tuesday, 09 August 2005 at 01:52 PM
ACT have a new calculator out showing that under Act tax policies we would have warmer winters...
You are better off with ACT

"Fantastic, I'm going to be better off with more money in my pocket, shame my society will be worse off."
So are you going to give all your extra money from Labour's student loan policy back to the IRD?
Or are you a hypocrite?

okay - it is a great day - I would love to take the afternoon off to go diving (with my Capitalist mates) but having a family of three and wife to support I need to stay at work. Truely glorious day in Wellington - and the weather will get a whole lot better from about 17 September onwards.

Yep. The sun will shine so much brighter, when the National Party has lost a third election in a row.

as Reggin I Perrin said,
"no one ever lay on their death bed wishing they'd spent more time at the office"
Posted by: Paul | Tuesday, 09 August 2005 at 04:13 PM
RWDB.
why would I, and if I don't why does that single me out as a hypocrite? A little selective on the I in society aren't we. Or do we really want to look at corporate books and see who is actually paying their full compliment of tax, are you?
Or does all of you right wing nutters, not voting for ACT or the libetarianz, but wasting it on National not make you guys hypocrites!
At least I'm going to be true to thy self and vote green.
Posted by: Paul | Tuesday, 09 August 2005 at 04:15 PM
Paul,
"why would I, and if I don't why does that single me out as a hypocrite?"
Because if you don't give your student loan savings back to the IRD, society will be worse off.
More money in pocket equals society worse off. That's what you just said.
Or are you a selfish prick who doesn't care about society?
Posted by: RWDB | Tuesday, 09 August 2005 at 04:34 PM
Paul - I am a provisional taxpayer. Every 4 months I get to write a whacking great cheque to send to the IRD. I pay because I am coerced to, but that money amounts to a great chunk of time spent at the office working for government. And time spent not enjoying the sun!
I don't feel the government spends my money well. You do. If you feel the money is going to good causes then donate more to the IRD! Give back your student loan savings. There are people who need the money better than you.
BTW, did you see this piece in The Guardian:

Gah what I wouldn't give for weather like that. At the moment it's raining buckets and it's 30 degrees. In a few months the weather will be below zero again.

It is high summer here and over the weekend the alpine pastures received snow down to 1600 metres and the automatic central heating came on. Thankfully summer seems to have returned today with a clear blue sky and 25 degrees.

"If you feel the money is going to good causes then donate more to the IRD! Give back your student loan savings."
So you get a tax cut under national.
You lot going to send a cheque into the IRD with your extra loot.
afterall
"There are people who need the money better than you."
