I agree with a lot of what David said about needing to grow the economy, a fairer system, and the failure of absolute austerity. But I don't agree that we should completely discard capitalism and the free market as some left-wing commentators are campaigning for. As the Greens have shown in their rise, the centre is where the votes are won and popularity is increased. The centre is not a tyranny as some lefties would have us believe, but where we need to be

Karen

Labour trying to be in the centre is the reason so many voters stayed at home - there just didn't seem to be enough difference between the two major parties. To get those voters back Labour needs to provide something very different from the policies of national. The capital gains tax was a start but not enough. David Cunliffe's speech is heartening and indicates the new New Zealand David Shearer says he wants is a possibility (awful way of putting it however).

Good to see Labour finally realising that you can articulate clear principles and values without waiting for a long policy revision process to end. Now to get the leader of the party on board?

Regan

You can still be centrist while retaining a difference from National, the trick is having the fortitude to make the decisions necessary for the long-term well-being of NZ, it's social, political AND economic future

Yes, a very good speech from Cunliffe, it's a pity the labour party have now seen fit to take it down off the website... ooh, Cunliffe is actually taking National on and cutting ties with their neo-liberal ideology (which a conservative Clark government colluded with to a certain extent)... quick, censor that!

For all his faults Cunliffe has the finger on the pulse here, Labour has to deliver a new and hard-hitting vision now and work on getting kiwis on-board for two years ... if they simply wait for natural attrition to kill National, and play National-lite with half social democratic, half neoliberal policies, then they will have no mandate for the radical change in philosophy and policy that the country needs. Winning the public debate about the stupidity of austerity in recession etc needs to happen now, otherwise, Labour will be playing second fiddle to the Nats tune once elected... and even the Greens who are slowly enunciating a convincing alternative economic vision for NZ.

Oh and Cunliffe has to give up on his leadership aspirations, swear allegiance to Shearer, and be set on the Nats as Labour's attack dog. He is the only front bencher with the mix of aggressiveness and nous to make a real impact in opposition. E.g. that speech!
